About our Regenerative Seafood

With the fishing industry lacking the leadership to aspire for anything greater than ‘sustainability’, Herd's ambition is to use consumption to regenerate fish stocks and the marine environment - not simply flat line them. Building on the work of Ben's first venture, Pesky Fish - who pioneered the first global framework for Regenerative Fishing - Herd now sources from over 80 boats that land across the UK and Channel Islands, enabling every buyer to enjoy regenerative seafood at the absolute peak of it's quality.
Storage & Prep

Packaging

Cook and consume your mussels within 2 days of delivery.

Fridge Life

Mussel optimal storage temperatures are from 4-7°C. Freezing will kill them! Keep them in your fridge until just before cooking.

Storage & Use

Upon receiving at home, we recommend emptying the bag into a colander, giving them a gentle rinse, drain, and pop in the fridge until you're ready to prepare that evening, ensuring they are stored in such a way that any excess liquid drains to the bottom and does not contaminate any other food. Do not store the mussels re-immersed in water. This may kill them.

If mussels are not tightly closed or do not rapidly close when tapped they are dead and should not be used. Discard cracked, broken or dead mussels. Mussels with visual anomalies (e.g. an odd colour or ‘cloudiness’) or malodour should be discarded.;.

Contrary to kitchen lore, mussels whose shells do not open after cooking can still be consumed - just gently pry open with a knife. You can find more preparation tips here: www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-cook-mussels.
